Film and stage sets where the maker manipulates what we see and therefore believe led me to think about our visual relationship to a 'real' modern city.

Using photographs I took of streets near the City Lit at dusk when both natural and artificial light illuminate the ‘scene', I made small scale 'sets' which I photographed. Collages of these photographs gave me images for paintings and gel transfers. I worked on aluminium, a reflective material with its own relationship to light, which is quintessentially modern, its production requiring electricity rather than the fire of iron and copper smelting.

I'm interested in how we relate to the modern city visually. Film and stage sets where the maker manipulates what we see and therefore believe made me think about our relationship to the 'real' city though vision and our perception of light. Using photographs I took of streets near the City Lit at dusk, a liminal or boundary time when both natural and artificial light sources illuminate the ‘scene', I made small scale 'sets' which I photographed again. Collages of these photographs gave me images for paintings and gel transfers on aluminium, a reflective material with its own relationship to light.
